By Itzel Carillo
How do you get rid of a cold sore fast? Are there remedies for cold sores that work effectively?
The reality is that there are many different remedies, and some work better on some people than on others. That's why trial and error is important. Hopefully you don't suffer from too many outbreaks so you are only asking the "how do you get rid of a cold sore" question infrequently!
Here I will provide a few remedies for cold sores that work for most people. Before that, I would point out that the best time to be asking how do you get rid of a cold sore is before the next outbreak. What you may not realize is that there are many remedies for cold sores which stop the outbreaks before they happen!
The cause is the Herpes virus. And one of the characteristics of the Herpes virus is that it spends most of its time buried deep in your nervous system, where it is really doing no harm. When its there it is not contagious either!
The problem occurs when it is triggered to activate. At that point, a small part of the virus surfaces and this is the part which is causing the outbreaks. If you can stop it from activating, then you have no more outbreaks. If you can make it feel unwelcome when it does surface, you will force it to deactivate and return to its hiding place in the nervous system.
Those are the remedies that you really should be exploring. But how do you get rid of a cold sore if you already have an outbreak?
On the first day, you will experience tingles and redness. Immediately start using Abreva or a similar over-the counter cream or ointment. Take Advil or another anti-inflammatory to help reduce the swelling. You should also take 3,000 mg of L-lysine. You can spread this out throughout the first day.
The key on the first day is to prepare a salt-based application. Use a tablespoon of salt and about the same volume of fairly warm water so that the salt barely dissolves. Apply with a q-tip and let it dry. Reapply your over-the-counter ointment.
Day two should see the swelling reduce by about half. Take the L-lysine again and use the ointment as needed. As soon as the sore opens up, apply peroxide to seal it.
Day three should have shown a great improvement. Use the peroxide again and when you pat it dry look to see if you can see new skin forming. Don't peel, instead apply a hydrocortisone cream to help with healing and keep it moist with this cream.
Keep up with the hydrocortisone cream daily until the sore is gone, but you should barely notice it after the end of the third day.
There are strategies to deal with never having an outbreak again, but if you are experiencing one then find out how to Rid of a Cold Sore Fast.
